Get to know Lanzarote

Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is under the control of Spain and part of the Canary Islands. The chain of islands was formed from a split in the earths crust that allowed lava to escape and form these volcanic islands. The last eruptions were around 300 years ago. The landscape is arid and dramatic. Beautiful beaches have a back drop of towering volcanoes.

Lanzarote is located off the west coast of the Sahara so is warm. Soaring summer temperatures are perfectly tempered by the tradewinds which kick in just as the temperatures start to rise. The climate is comfortable all year round thus creating a twelve month tourist season.

Tourists visiting the island do so almost exclusively by airplane landing at Arrecife airport.

In recent years more and more cheap flight companies have started to add the island to their scheduled routes.

Lanzarote has three main tourist destinations. These are Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise. Puerto del Carmen was the first established resort on Lanzarote and still receives the majority of visits. Costa Teguise was established second but its popularity has been eclipsed by Playa Blanca. All of these three resorts have beautiful beaches and very dependable weather.

There are a whole host of great places to visit on the island a few of the best are:-
The Timanfaya Mountains – where the most recent eruptions occurred. Like landing on the moon.
Jameos de Agua – The worlds longest lava tube and blind albino crabs.
Papagayo beaches – spectacular unspoilt beaches
Famara beach – learn to surf, kitesurf and get brown

Plus golf courses, aqua parks and a whole host of great bars, restaurants, vineyards, shops and many many beautiful beaches.

Ryanair have a reputation of being the cheapest flight company but beware that almost everything is extra. A top tip for flying budget style with Ryanair is to buy a hand luggage suitcase with wheels. Make sure it is made to the exact maximum size you are allowed for hand luggage. This will save you one of the surcharges straight away.
